Thuringia: record temperatures on New Year's Eve in Thuringia

Leipzig (dpa/th) - Already in the morning, the highest temperatures on a New Year's Eve since records began were measured in Thuringia. The German Weather Service (DWD) reported 15.8 degrees in Jena on Saturday morning. The previous high was 15.2 degrees last year. At the Erfurt-Weimar weather station, 15 degrees were already measured at 10 a.m., almost 2 degrees more than the previous daily record.

Even the record at the Schmücke in the Thuringian Forest was broken in the morning. According to the DWD, 9.0 degrees were measured here. The previous high was recorded here last year at 7.3 degrees. "It's exceptionally mild at the turn of the year. We assume that new temperature records will be set nationwide," said meteorologist Cathleen Hickmann.

On New Year's Eve it is also very windy to stormy in Thuringia. Wind speeds of up to 85 kilometers per hour are expected at lower altitudes, and even 90 at higher altitudes in the Thuringian Forest. The wind dies down on New Year's Eve.

According to the DWD, on Sunday and at the start of the week it will remain mild with temperatures in the double-digit range. It's not supposed to get a little cooler until the middle of the week.
