Thuringia: Shortage of skilled workers: Young people from El Salvador take up work

Weimar/Erfurt (dpa/th) - In order to cover the need for skilled workers, several care facilities in Thuringia are now increasingly relying on trainees from Latin America. A group of 17 young people from El Salvador recently started their nursing training in a total of five nursing homes in Erfurt, Weimar, Gotha, Tannroda (Weimarer Land) and Eisenach (Wartburg district). Although efforts are being made in Thuringia to attract as many domestic specialists as possible for the care sector, said Thuringia's Labor Minister Heike Werner (left) on Wednesday in Weimar at a meeting with the new trainees from Central America. However, it is clear that Germany and thus also Thuringia, especially in the care sector, will not be able to cover the existing need for skilled workers with domestic workers alone. "We welcome everyone, but we also have to specifically advertise for skilled workers," said Werner.

The trainees from El Salvador were recruited through a Federal Employment Agency project that is specifically looking for young people in Latin America for the German job market.
