Thuringia: Siegesmund against coalition statement at the next state election

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Environment Minister Anja Siegesmund advocates that the Greens go to the next state elections in 2024 without making a coalition statement. That is her personal opinion, not a commitment that her party has made, Siegesmund said on Tuesday in the summer interview with MDR Thuringia. At the last state election in 2019, Siegesmund was the Greens’ top candidate together with today’s Justice Minister Dirk Adams.

She left it open whether she would strive for that again. At the same time, she did not fundamentally rule out coalition options with the CDU and thus beyond Red-Red-Green. The Greens, together with the Left and the SPD, have been the government in Thuringia since 2014, currently a minority government that lacks four votes in the state parliament. In the last representative survey, Siegesmund's party came up with seven percent.

In view of the energy crisis and the throttled gas supply volumes from Russia, Siegesmund again called for saving gas in particular. According to their information, the Thuringian gas storage facilities can cover a maximum of ten percent of the demand in the Free State - Thuringia is therefore dependent on being supplied permanently via lines from other federal states.

The Green politician rejects a fundamental extension of the lifetime of nuclear power plants. Chernobyl and Fukushima have shown that this is a high-risk technology. However, there is talk of extending the operation of the remaining nuclear power plants in Germany. It is about the security of supply in the cold season.
