Erfurt (dpa/th) - The slaughter of animals in Thuringia has remained about the same year-on-year. As the Thuringian State Office for Statistics in Erfurt announced on Friday, 204,490 animals were slaughtered from January to September, just a little more than the 204,412 animals of the same period in 2021. 34,408 tons of meat were produced in the first nine months of this year. This is a decrease of 405 tons (1.2 percent) compared to 34,813 tons in 2021.

The number of pigs slaughtered rose by 2,638 animals or 2.1 percent to 130,956, while the number of cattle fell by 2,105 animals or 2.9 percent to 69,471. The decline in sheep with 414 animals (minus 10.5 percent) to 3515 animals and goats with a decrease of 35 animals (minus 6.1 percent) to 537 was clearer. In the case of horses, 11 animals were slaughtered, 6 animals less than in 2021.
