Thuringia: State increases stocks for crisis prevention

Not only private households and the economy feel that not all goods are always and everywhere immediately available. Storage has therefore gained in importance - also for the Free State.

Erfurt (dpa/th) - In view of the crises in recent years, Thuringia is storing additional material, for example for the police and civil protection. As a result of the corona pandemic, stocks of medical masks and protective suits have been increased, a spokesman for the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior told the German Press Agency. The pandemic and the Ukraine war have increasingly led to delivery problems, so it is important to have some goods in stock in large numbers.

In order to keep vehicles operational, the Thuringian police also stocked up on a urea additive for cleaning emissions from diesel cars. Additional decentralized capacities have been created for this purpose, the spokesman said. Some modern diesel cars cannot even be started without this addition. There had recently been bottlenecks in the delivery of this substance.

In addition, more diesel was stored for the police. This should continue to happen. Above all, it should be ensured that the emergency power generators available at the police station to protect the digital radio can be reliably refueled - even if the fuel supply in Germany should be disrupted.

The country's civil protection units have four decentralized camps, according to the Interior Ministry. Among other things, 1.7 million sandbags and sandbag filling machines are currently stored there for flood protection. In addition, for example, 800 protective suits that can be used in the event of chemical contamination, as well as tents, forklifts, spades, shovels and chainsaws.

More stored material requires more storage space. In the past, this has temporarily led to the police having to rent storage containers, it said.
