Thuringia: State Office: Heat protection employs more the larger cities

Jena/Erfurt (dpa/th) - According to the State Office for the Environment, Mining and Nature Conservation (TLUBN) in Thuringia, heat protection as a reaction to climate change has so far mainly been an issue for the larger cities. "Where the problems are most pressing, you worry," said Stefan Brune from the Climate Competence Center at the TLUBN of the German Press Agency. According to the competence center, the larger Thuringian cities are more susceptible to heat because of their valley location, especially since they are densely built-up. They heat up more in summer sunshine.

Jena in the Saale valley, for example, is also one of the warmest cities in Germany. Temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius are expected in Thuringia on Wednesday. The German Weather Service has issued official heat warnings.

The competence center makes climate data available to municipalities and advises them on measures that they can use to prepare for climate change. It is also about better protection against heavy rain and flooding as well as strategies for low water levels.
