Thuringia: Statistics: Number of divorces continues to decline

Erfurt (dpa/th) - According to statistics, the number of divorces in Thuringia has reached the second lowest level after 1993. At that time 2643 marriages were divorced, so there were 3285 last year, as the State Office for Statistics announced on Friday in Erfurt. The previous high was reached in 2003 with 5558 divorces.

As the statisticians also reported, the number of divorces has fallen since 2003 from arithmetically 2.3 to 1.6 divorces per 1000 inhabitants. Also since 2003, the number of marriages initially rose from 3.5 to 4.8 in 2018 and has since fallen to 3.7 marriages per 1000 inhabitants last year. The number of marriages in 2021, at 7728, was more than twice as high as that of divorces.

According to the information, most divorces took place in 2021 after the 8th year of marriage. In 2020, most couples had already divorced after the 6th year of marriage.

16.3 percent of the divorced couples had already celebrated their silver wedding anniversary when they divorced in 2021 and had therefore spent at least 25 years of marriage together. In the reporting year, a marriage in Thuringia lasted an average of 14.5 years before it ended in divorce. Ten years earlier, the average marriage length was 15.8 years.

In 51.8 percent of all cases, women applied for divorce in 2021, in the remaining 40.8 percent the man was the applicant. In 7.4 percent of the divorce proceedings, the application was filed by both parties. In 87.2 percent of the cases, the other partner agreed to the divorce application.

According to statistics, 28 same-sex marriages ended in divorce in 2021. This corresponded to 0.9 percent of all divorces. The number of divorces between same-sex couples fell by 7 compared to the previous year.
