Thuringia: the number of clubs in Thuringia is falling: the strongest decline

Berlin (dpa/th) - In Thuringia, the number of clubs is decreasing. This is the result of a study by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. Accordingly, the number has fallen by 7.8 percent since 2012 - the sharpest decline in a nationwide comparison. Nevertheless, in Thuringia there are 9 clubs per 1000 inhabitants, the third highest value in the Federal Republic. According to the study, there were 18,840 clubs in Bavaria in 2022, compared to 20,444 in 2012.

According to the study, the number of clubs increased nationwide: from 2016 to 2022 it was 2 percent more. Berlin recorded the strongest increase with growth of 22.3 percent.

According to the Stifterverband, the role of associations is also changing. They therefore want to provide impetus for social and political change more often and are less oriented towards the interests of their members.

The study was carried out by Civil Society in Numbers (Ziviz), a subsidiary of the Stifterverband. In order to determine the club numbers, Ziviz read out the club register.
