Thuringia: Thomas Kemmerich: Negotiation in mid-September

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The Thuringian constitutional court is scheduled to negotiate an application from Thuringia's former short-term Prime Minister Thomas Kemmerich (FDP) on September 15. The court announced on Thursday. The administrative court in Weimar had declared Kemmerich's election as a member of the Erfurt city council in the 2019 city council election to be invalid. Kemmerich had lodged a constitutional complaint against this.

The reason for Kemmerich's loss of the mandate is a place of residence regulation. Accordingly, only those who have their main residence there can run for a seat on the city council. The administrative court was not of the opinion that Kemmerich, as prescribed, had his main focus of residence in Erfurt at the time of the 2019 local elections. The Higher Administrative Court did not allow an appeal.
