Will there be a white Christmas this year? For the operators of hotels, guesthouses and holiday apartments, that would certainly not be bad with regard to holidaymakers.

Suhl (dpa/th) - In view of the wintry conditions in the Thuringian Forest, the tourism industry in the region is hoping for many Christmas and New Year's vacationers. A spokesman for the Thuringian Forest regional association said that some hotels were already reporting a fairly good booking situation.

"The winter is visible, you can tell that people are looking for something now." The closer the Christmas holidays approached, the more difficult it could be with the quarters when the winter weather is nice. However, many potential guests were still waiting.

According to the assessment of the regional association, the trend towards spontaneous bookings that has been observed for several years has intensified in the Corona pandemic. "The bookings have become even shorter," said a spokeswoman for Thüringer Tourismus GmbH (TTG). This is currently in the process of getting an overview of the booking situation in the Christmas holidays from operators of holiday accommodation.

However, according to the German Weather Service, there is still a question mark over a white Christmas. Meteorologist Jens Oehmichen said it currently looks like the well-known Christmas thaw will return this year. This can be expected from the beginning of next week. Then it could be over with the winter weather up to the high altitudes. "But a Christmas vacation in the Thuringian Forest is always nice," said Oehmichen.

It is the most important holiday area in the Free State. According to statistics, in the pre-pandemic year 2019, 4.3 million overnight stays were recorded, in 2021 there were almost 2.7 million overnight stays.
