Thuringia: Thuringian universities are preparing for an energy bottleneck

Erfurt (dpa/th) - According to the ministry, Thuringia's universities are working on emergency plans in order to be prepared for a possible gas bottleneck in autumn and winter. At the same time, attempts are already being made to reduce energy consumption, the Thuringian Ministry of Higher Education announced on Tuesday in Erfurt. This was the result of a survey of the ten state universities and technical colleges, the Jena University Hospital and the student union.

A restriction of teaching and research from the winter semester onwards can no longer be ruled out, explained State Secretary for Science Carsten Feller. "We're currently hoping for the best, but as a precaution we have to prepare for bottlenecks in the energy supply."

Technical systems would also be checked and changed to save energy - such as converting the lighting to LED, the use of thermostats and twilight switches, and limited opening hours for central facilities such as the university cafeteria, libraries or laboratories. Some universities could use efficient building management systems. In other cases, energy-related renovations are planned or are already underway.

The phased plans for emergencies in the event of a lack of gas provide, among other things, for the reduction of room temperatures, restricted heating times, the switching off of lighting systems or the closure of buildings or parts of buildings that are not absolutely necessary for university operations. The share of telework or online teaching would then be significantly increased again. "All emergency plans will be further specified in the lecture-free period that is now beginning and will then be available in good time before the next semester and the start of the new heating period," said the State Secretary.
