Thuringia: Union calls for more safety for train crews

Erfurt (dpa/th) - After the deadly knife attack in a regional train in Schleswig-Holstein, the railway and transport union (EVG) in Thuringia called for more safety for employees. "The employees are calling us more and more and saying that they are afraid of driving their shift," said EVG state chairman Mario Noack on Thursday.

Without urgently needed funding from the federal and state governments, it is simply not possible for the railway providers to provide more security personnel on the trains, according to Noack. The competitive pressure ensures savings in safety and personnel - at the expense of colleagues, but also the passengers.

In the attack on a regional train between Kiel and Hamburg on January 25, a 17-year-old and a 19-year-old were killed. Five people were injured. An arrest warrant was issued against the alleged perpetrator Ibrahim A. for two counts of murder and four counts of attempted manslaughter.
