Thuringia: Universities: More staff, but fewer female professors

Erfurt (dpa/th) - More people were employed at Thuringian universities in 2021 than in the previous year. A total of around 21,000 people worked at universities and clinics in Thuringia by the beginning of December last year, according to figures from the State Statistical Office on Tuesday. That was around 1,800 (9.3 percent) more than at the end of 2020.

More than half worked in the scientific field in 2021 (58.8 percent). Among them, around 1,360 professors taught and researched full-time, which was 4.7 percent more than in December 2020. 41.2 percent worked in non-academic areas such as administration, libraries, technical services and nursing services.

The proportion of women among all university staff was 55 percent at the end of 2021. However, it differed greatly depending on the activity performed, as the statisticians reported. The majority of women can still be found in non-scientific staff (70.2 percent). The number of full-time female professors remained low at 27.1 percent (2020: 25.9 percent). In a ten-year comparison, however, there was an increase of 11.1 percentage points.
