Thuringia: University clinic: around 53 million euros building in operation

Jena (dpa/th) - In Jena, a 52.75 million euro building section of the University Hospital (UKJ) has been put into operation. This is the last major milestone "in the impressive new building history of the UKJ," said Science Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee (SPD) on Friday. According to the information, the part of the building that has now been put into operation connects the first and second construction phases of the clinic in Jena-Lobeda and was funded with around 40 million euros by the state of Thuringia. Another 12.75 million euros must be generated by the clinic in patient care.

Tiefensee said that medical care, teaching and research at Thuringia's only university hospital will be further strengthened. The increased capacity for study places in human medicine since 2021 will also be taken into account. "Especially in the field of sepsis and infection research, aging research, but also in the field of medical optics and photonics, the UKJ is one of the leading research institutions in Germany," said the minister.

The new building section A5 comprises 5700 square meters of floor space on six floors. The building of the old clinic for internal medicine was demolished for the construction.

"The new A5 building enables us to implement significant improvements in the quality of patient care, for example through the spatial connection of the Clinic for Radiation Therapy and Radiation Oncology to the interdisciplinary partners in the University Tumor Center," said Otto Witte, Medical Director of the UKJ.
