Thuringia: Up to 3000 people expected at the CSD demonstration

Jena (dpa/th) - It should be colorful and loud, but has a serious background: at the CSD parade on Saturday (2 p.m.) in Jena, between 2,000 and 3,000 participants are expected to demonstrate for the rights of queer people and stand up for equality. Non-heterosexual people or those who do not identify with the traditional role model of men and women or other social norms relating to gender and sexuality describe themselves as queer.

The three-car train is to start at Westbahnhof and move through the city center towards Holzmarkt. There will be information stands and a stage program until the evening.

The first CSD took place in Jena in 1999. After a 20-year break, the CSD Jena Alliance was founded in 2019, which is now organizing the third Christopher Street Day in the city.

The CSD is celebrated worldwide and is intended to remind of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people. The movement goes back to an event at the end of June 1969. Police officers in New York stormed the "Stonewall Inn" bar on Christopher Street and triggered an uprising by gays, lesbians and transsexuals against the despotism.
