Thuringia: Voigt: "Energy Socialism" of the left is the wrong way

Erfurt (dpa/th) - In the debate about how to deal with skyrocketing energy prices, the Thuringian CDU parliamentary group leader Mario Voigt accused the left in the state parliament of "energy socialism". "They want to continue to support those whose costs for accommodation and heating are already being borne by the state," said Voigt on Monday in a position paper by the left-wing faction that was published over the weekend. But this is the wrong way.

In the paper, the left-wing faction proposed, among other things, an energy hardship fund to relieve low-income households. In addition, the state should launch programs to support municipal companies that have liquidity problems. The parliamentary group also proposed inexpensive basic quotas for electricity and gas.

"However, the price rally on the energy markets hits the average citizen and small and medium-sized businesses the hardest," said Voigt. Instead of constantly giving citizens new tips for colder showers and less heating, the federal government must reduce electricity, energy and value added tax for energy. "The federal and state governments must now let go of their ideological blinkers when it comes to nuclear energy and allow this form of energy, which is capable of providing a base load, to continue to operate for a transitional period."
