Thuringia: warning of ice breakage in the Thuringian Forest

Winter sports enthusiasts should be careful: Many trees are currently carrying a heavy load of snow and ice in the Thuringian Forest. Branches and treetops are reaching their breaking point and are already bending dangerously over cross-country trails and slopes.

Suhl (dpa/th) - Skiers should be particularly careful in the Thuringian Forest at the moment. There is a risk of ice breakage and fallen trees, said the Thuringian Forest regional association on Tuesday.

Some trails have already been closed because of this, said spokeswoman Maja Reumessel. Spruce crowns break off under the ice load.

In general, however, prevailed in the Thuringian Forest. More than 800 kilometers of cross-country trails are currently prepared. The snow reaches heights of up to 38 centimeters. 50 routes are open to winter hikers.
