Thuringia: world bell ringing honors old Apolda bell tradition

Apolda (dpa/th) - 300 years after the establishment of the first bell founder, Apolda will acoustically remind on Saturday (7 p.m.) of the tradition as a bell city. When the world bells ring, sound recordings of bells can be heard that were once cast in Apolda for churches on three continents. Bells from Israel, Brazil and Germany are represented. From 1722 to 1988, Apolda was a center of the bell foundry trade. From there come, among other things, the large Cologne Cathedral bell, the peal of the Dresden Kreuzkirche and the carillon for the French Cathedral in Berlin.

In 1722 Johann Christoph Rose opened the first casting works in Apolda, later other workshops were added. In 1988 the now nationalized bell production was stopped. According to the local Bell Museum, over the centuries more than 50,000 bells have been cast in Apolda and shipped to many countries around the world.
