Tourism The country in the world with the most time zones: a total of twelve

There are 38 different time zones on Earth, established according to the UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) standard. Some countries have more than one. For example, Spain has two, since the time in the Canary Islands is different from that followed by the rest of the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla.

The record for the country in the world with the most time zones is held by France, which has a total of 12. This is due to the large number of former colonies with which it maintains ties, since they are territories that are located far from the old continent and spread over different places on the planet. The 12 French time zones are as follows.

This list does not take into account Adélie Land, an area located at the eastern end of Antarctica. Although France claimed that territory, with which it would add 13 different time zones, its claim is restricted by the terms of the Antarctic Treaty signed in 1959.

The official website of the Guinness Records indicates that the countries with the most time zones after France are the United States and Russia, with 11 each. They are followed by Antarctica, Australia and the United Kingdom with nine, while Canada has six.

Other countries known for their great extension on the map have fewer time zones than they would actually correspond to. Everyone in China follows Beijing time, except for the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Something similar happens with India, with a single time zone.
