Two 14-year-old adolescents accused of shooting eight people to death at a party in the central state of Mexico and injuring seven others have been arrested, authorities reported Thursday.
The alleged murderers, along with seven others accused of being involved in the crime, were captured in an operation carried out between last Friday and Saturday, the federal government reported in a statement.
Two women were also arrested along with Luis Raúl "N", alias El Ñoño, and Said "N", nicknamed El Chapito, both "14 years old", in the municipalities of Chimalhuacán and Nezahualcóyotl, in the state of Mexico.
"The first investigations revealed that on January 22, a family was celebrating a birthday in the Fundidores neighborhood, in Chimalhuacán, when a group of armed men arrived on motorcycles," in which the two minors "shot at the attendees and they fled".
Three adults died at the scene and another five died in various hospitals, an attack that also left "seven injured, including two under 3 and 14 years of age."
In January, the government reported that intentional homicides in Mexico fell 7.1% in 2022 compared to 2021, to a total of 30,968 cases.
The Latin American country has suffered a wave of violence that has intensified since 2006, when the government further militarized its strategy against drug traffickers, with a balance of 350,000 homicides and tens of thousands of disappearances, mostly attributed to organized crime.
