Ukraine war Ukraine says it shot down a Russian supersonic missile for the first time

Ukraine claimed on Saturday that it shot down a Russian Kinzhal supersonic missile for the first time this week, during a wave of attacks from Moscow on Wednesday night into Thursday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin himself presented the Kinzhal missile in 2018, calling it an "ideal weapon" due to its difficulty to be intercepted.

"And yes, we have shot down the 'unrivaled' Kinzhal missile," General Mikola Oleshchuk said on Telegram. "I congratulate the Ukrainian people on this historic event," he added.

The Ukrainian air force said the missile was shot down in kyiv thanks to a Patriot anti-aircraft system in the early hours of Wednesday to Thursday.

Ukraine received the first Patriots in mid-April, considered one of the most advanced US air defense systems.

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenski, said that this system would "significantly" strengthen his country's defenses against Russian attacks.
