UN humanitarians killed in Sudan: Paris expresses its dismay

Paris is back. France expressed on Sunday "its dismay" after the deaths in Sudan of three aid workers from the World Food Program (WFP) and the NGO Relief International. In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs "reiterates its call to do everything possible to put an end to the fighting and prevent any escalation" and calls for "full respect for the protection due to humanitarian personnel".

Those responsible for the deaths of the three aid workers in the fighting in Sudan must be "brought to justice as soon as possible", spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday.

The latter "strongly condemns" the death of civilians, including that of these three humanitarians, added his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric in a press release. "The premises of the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations were also hit by projectiles and looted in several places in Darfur," he said.

The UN Security Council will address the situation in Sudan behind closed doors on Monday, diplomatic sources told Agence France Presse.

Fighting pitted the Sudanese army against a powerful paramilitary force for the second day in a row on Sunday, amid a power struggle between the two generals in command of Sudan since the putsch of 2021. At least 56 civilians were killed in 24 hours.
