The US Senate has voted in favor of Sweden and Finland joining NATO. There was broad cross-party support for the accession of the two northern European countries on Wednesday evening (local time), 95 senators voted yes, only one member of the parliamentary chamber voted no.
The accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO has to be ratified by the parliaments of all currently 30 member states. So far, this has already happened in more than half of the NATO countries. Around three months ago, Finland and Sweden submitted their applications to join the military alliance against the background of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
