War in Ukraine: Russian missile kills one in Mykolaiv

A Russian missile killed one person and injured more than a dozen in the early hours of Thursday in Mykolaiv, a city in southern Ukraine, authorities said. "Around 1 a.m. [midnight in Paris], the residents of Mykolaiv heard four loud explosions," the city's mayor, Oleksandr Senkevich, said on Telegram. "We already know that one of the missiles hit a tall building. Another hit a detached house,” he said.

Oleksandr Senkevich added that some homes in the city were without electricity. "So far, we are aware of 15 injuries and one death," said Vitaliy Kim, head of the regional military administration. Both Vitaliy Kim and the regional police chief said an apartment building was hit.

Mykolaiv is located on the Black Sea, about 170 kilometers from Crimea, annexed by Moscow in 2014. Russian forces have targeted it frequently since they began their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. According to the High Office of the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights, more than 8,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since that date. He added that these figures, last updated in mid-March, are likely understated.

On Tuesday, another missile strike at a museum killed two people and injured ten in Kupyansk, northeastern Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had denounced a "barbaric" Russian attack, accusing Russia of being "a terrorist country" that "does everything to destroy us completely".
