Wimbledon 2022: Cameron Norrie's Welsh heritage

This is the season for strawberries and cream. We are hoping that a Brit will lift the Wimbledon trophy.

As the championship reaches its peak, there are even more reasons for Welsh fans not to miss any rally.

Cameron Norrie will be facing Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, in the semi-finals. He has strong Welsh connections.

Helen, the mother of the 26-year old Welshman, is from Cardiff. So Wales has a strong chance to claim him as its own... right?

Norrie is the first British male to reach the Wimbledon singles semifinals since Andy Murray (2016) and the first British player since Johanna Konta 2017.

He will face Djokovic on Friday, the top seed. Djokovic is seeking a fourth consecutive title and seventh overall at All England Club.

Norrie was born in South Africa, and raised in New Zealand. She is currently ranked 12th in world rankings.

His mother Helen is from Wales, and his father David is Scottish.

Bronwen Norrie was Bronwen's sister and spoke out in advance of Friday's big game against Djokovic.

She said that her mother's parents, Joan and Glyn Williams, lived in Cardiff from their mid-thirties to their late thirties.

"My grandfather worked at the Western Mail in Cardiff. But he, my grandmother, and the rest of our family emigrated to South Africa."

Cameron, who was 16 years old, moved to London in 2011 with his family. He has been representing Britain ever since.

The Williams family moved to South Africa, and then New Zealand. Cameron and Bronwen have still family in Wales.

"My great-uncle Ralph Williams still lives in Wales, and we will see him whenever we can."

She said, "Sport is very important to us as families - we all enjoy watching and playing sport."

"My mother runs almost every single day and my father bikes and plays tennis."

Cam, also known as Cameron, was a great athlete in many sports throughout his childhood in New Zealand. But, he had to make a choice and choose tennis.

Bronwen explained that Cam played many sports growing up, including cricket, football and athletics.

He had to pick the one sport that he enjoyed the most as he grew older.

His greatest win was the 2021 Indian Wells Masters.

Norrie still enjoys many other sports, including the New Zealand All Blacks rugby union team, the South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league team, and the Newcastle United Football Club.

Is it hard for him to choose a team to support in the Welsh rugby match against New Zealand because of his mixed heritage?

Bronwen stated that, "We are conscious of our Welsh heritage but it cannot be said that there is any difficult decision to make Cam between Wales or the All Blacks."

A professional tennis player's schedule can be very busy. There is a lot of travel and lodging.

"The downsides of this are that he must make sacrifices and doesn't get the chance to see his loved ones as often.

Bronwen said that the benefits of Bronwen's job are that he can compete, travel the globe and do a job he enjoys every day with a great group behind him.
