Airport chaos continues: aviation waits in vain for Turkish employees

Up to 2000 workers from Turkey should help to solve the luggage problems at the airports in Germany. However, the aviation industry's plan is in danger of failing. So far, there have been hardly any applications from potential employees.

Passengers at Germany's airports must continue to be prepared for long waiting times, delays and flight cancellations. "The situation is stabilizing. The ad hoc measures taken are having an effect. However, we are not satisfied. The current conditions do not meet our requirements," said Ralph Beisel, general manager of the airport association ADV, the "Welt". Improvements can only be expected from October, when the main travel season is over. According to information from the German Economic Institute, up to 7,000 skilled workers are currently missing at the airports.

The disruptions in luggage loading caused by staff shortages were actually supposed to be remedied by up to 2,000 temporary employees from Turkey. However, most authorities have not yet received any applications from Turkey on the basis of which they can carry out the reliability checks (ZÜP) required for work at airports, reports "Welt", citing the authorities responsible for the airports in Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich and Dusseldorf. "At Munich Airport, however, we are currently not seeing an above-average increase in applications from Turkish workers," said a spokesman for the Bavarian Aviation Office.

With time pressure mounting, the aviation industry is urging authorities to carry out background checks as soon as possible once applications arrive from Turkey. "A processing time of two weeks should be possible," says Beisel. However, the aviation authorities in Berlin/Brandenburg and Düsseldorf rejected the request, saying that it was not possible to simplify or accelerate the ZÜP.
