"Back to the Future": More prestige for DeLorean with the Alpha5

After DeLorean could not really score with the new edition of the DMC-12, the company now wants to bring its own vehicle under the label. The gullwing called Alpha5 is based on its legendary role model, but clearly sets its own accents.

The DeLorean car brand, which was revived years ago, has unveiled its first new model with the Alpha5. The comeback vehicle has little in common with the DMC-12 from the 80s, which achieved cult status thanks to the Hollywood film "Back to the Future". The Alpha5, announced for 2024 and limited to 88 copies, is intended to be the start of an entire DeLorean model family.

Like the DMC-12, the design of the Alpha5 was penned by Italdesign. As a reference to the original Delorean, the Italians opted for gullwing doors and a hatchback with a louvered rear window cover. Otherwise, the five-meter-long four-seater avoids retro elements. Rather, the model is characterized by an elegant Gran Turismo design that conveys a futuristic impression with the help of elaborately staged LED illumination.

Of course, the Alpha5 drives purely electrically. However, DeLorean does not provide precise information about the drive. The streamlined Stromer should sprint to 100 km/h in about three seconds and reach a maximum speed of 250 km/h. Thanks to a battery with a capacity of over 100 kWh, a range of over 480 kilometers should be possible according to practical EPA measurements.

The omission of the B-pillars creates a generous entrance to the four individual seats of the Alpha5. The pilot finds himself in front of a cockpit with almost no buttons or switches. Behind the steering wheel there is a large display for information relevant to driving, and in the center console there is a large-format touchscreen as an interface for the infotainment system and many vehicle functions.

Prices for the Alpha5 are not yet mentioned. Presumably they move beyond 150,000 euros, because after all, according to DeLorean, it is a flagship model that should give the car brand more prestige. The Alpha5 will later be followed by a sports coupé with a V8 engine, a battery-electric sedan and an SUV with a fuel cell drive.
