Brazil A senator accuses Jair Bolsonaro of trying to convince him to carry out the coup

Brazilian Senator Marcos do Val, who was close to former President Jair Bolsonaro, accused the former president of trying to convince him to stage a coup and not recognize the election victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

"I got angry when they called me a Bolsonaro. You wait for me to drop a 'bomb'. On Friday it will appear in the (magazine) Veja Bolsonaro's attempt to convince me to carry out a coup with him," the senator declared in a video through social networks.

The legislator from the center-right Podemos party stated that he refused Bolsonaro's request and therefore decided to denounce him.

Later, in another message through his networks, Do Val announced that he is "definitely leaving politics" and will resign from the term of senator that he has until 2026 for family and health reasons after "four years of exclusive dedication" and a principle heart attack

"I lost coexistence with my family, especially with my daughter. It was not worth it to be transparent, honest and fight for a better Brazil and without the attacks and offenses that continue to occur," said the senator, who announced that he will return to the United States States, where he lived.

The congressman's statement came after the 513 deputies and a third of the senators elected in October took possession of their seats and Lula's victory by managing to re-elect his ally Rodrigo Pacheco to the presidency of the Senate.

Bolsonaro, who is in the United States with no plans to return to Brazil, has so far not recognized Lula's victory in the second round of elections in October and is being investigated in the case of the coup acts on January 8 in Brasilia.

That day, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters who had been camped out for more than two months in front of the Army headquarters, asking for a military intervention to overthrow Lula, invaded and destroyed the headquarters of the three powers.

More than 1,800 people were arrested in the anti-democratic acts and a third remain arrested by order of the Supreme Court.
