Commute A.I.R. Pro 18: Evoc launches the first cycling backpack with an airbag

The cyclist's head airbag has been around for some time as a possible alternative to the helmet. Now the outdoor outfitter Evoc is launching an airbag backpack for cyclists - the first in the world. And the airbag can even be reused once it has been deployed. But it's not all cheap.

The sports backpack and protector manufacturer Evoc is launching the Commute A.I.R. Pro 18 launched the world's first airbag backpack for cyclists. The compact transport ash contains a fall detection sensor and also offers practical storage space with a volume of 22 liters.

If the sensors register a critical situation, a reusable airbag with a volume of 18 liters is filled within 0.2 seconds using a gas cartridge, protecting the neck, shoulders, collarbones and chest area.

A back protector integrated in the backpack also offers protection for the spine. In order to optimally protect his head in the event of a fall or crash, the cyclist must also wear a bicycle helmet or other protection such as an airbag for the head.

In order for the airbag technology to work, the backpack wearer has to close a magnetic buckle on the chest after shouldering, which was developed in cooperation with Fidlock. Only then is the security technology activated. The battery-operated and USB-rechargeable sensor system then constantly checks and analyzes - according to Evoc up to 1100 times per second - the location and position of the backpack.

If a fall is imminent, the airbag is deployed. If this has been deployed, the airbag can be reused provided it is not damaged. Only the inflator, i.e. the gas cartridge, has to be replaced. The system is also deactivated via the magnetic buckle.

Made from recycled polyester, the Commute A.I.R. In addition to its protective technology, the Pro 18 offers many organizational compartments and a special laptop slot for 15-inch devices. With a price of 990 euros, however, it goes far beyond the price level of comparable backpacks.
