The general secretary of UGT, Pepe Álvarez, stated this Monday that Mercadona's wages are "well above" the average of what workers in the distribution sector earn and believes that focusing on the company "that pays better", is not the best way to situate the problem that exists around companies that pass on prices in an abusive way.
"It seems to me that precisely focusing on the one that pays the best is not the best way to situate this problem, which actually exists," said Álvarez, after being asked about the criticism from the Minister for Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda, Ione Belarra, the president of Mercadona, Juan Roig, whom he described as a "ruthless capitalist" for "filling his pockets" at the expense of high food prices.
Álvarez has recalled and has once again shown that Mercadona is a company that has raised the wages of its workers both in 2021 and 2022 and will do so in 2023.
In spite of everything, the general secretary of the UGT has affirmed, in statements to the press after attending the informative breakfast of Europa Press with the president of Asturias, Adrián Barbón, that Spain is currently facing a problem regarding "the distribution companies of foods that have an abusive effect on prices".
