Economy Meeting of the Circle of Economy: less politicians, more questions, and more international and economic debate

The Círculo de Economía will break with the trend of recent years in its traditional conferences. The annual meeting that will be held in Barcelona from May 29 to 31, just after the municipal and regional elections of 28-M, will have a smaller presence of politicians and the economic and international debate will prevail in its program. "With long lights and not so focused on the short term", as described by the entity's president, Jaume Guardiola. "We have wanted to develop a more international program, with more geopolitics, to find out what is thought abroad", the general director of the business lobby, Miquel Nadal, has abounded.

For scheduling reasons, the President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, will not be at the opening of the event, as usual, but will attend the second day. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will close the last day on Wednesday, the day on which the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, will also participate a few hours before. Traditionally, the head of the opposition did it on the second day.

The agenda has also caused the Vice President of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Caviño, not to attend on this occasion. On the other hand, the head of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations, José Luis Escrivá, will do so. On behalf of the Generalitat, the Minister of Economy, Natàlia Mas, will also be present.

Another of the changes from this year's Meeting, entitled Reactivate the future. Economy, geopolitics and opportunities for progress, is that the interventions of politicians will include more interaction to break with the discourses that almost completely monopolized their interventions.

The Círculo also wanted to "spong up the program so that the events last for at least one hour." Among the invited guests are Ivan Krastev (president of the Center for Liberal Strategies), Mario Centeno (governor of the Bank of Portugal) or Robin Brooks (chief economist of the Institute of International Finance).

The geopolitical situation will be addressed with foreign speakers, but also Spanish. This is the case of the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and the Deputy Secretary General for Diplomatic Affairs of NATO, Carmen Romero. Also at the business level, two relevant Spanish executives will offer an international perspective: Joaquín Duato, CEO of the Johnson company

The Prize for European Construction will be awarded to the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, for his efforts in welcoming refugees from the war in Ukraine and for his defense of European values. The jury wants to recognize, in this way, the role of European cities in this conflict, and of Poland in particular. "Warsaw has increased its population by 20%", Guardiola emphasized to value "not only the solidarity shown, but also the high management capacity".
