Hardly any change in the supermarket: Due to warning strikes, cash is running out

Due to the nationwide strike in the security transport industry since the previous week, cash is now becoming scarce in ATMs, supermarkets or at gas stations. Customers should use card payment when paying, as there may be a lack of change.

In German retail there is a shortage of cash in some places. The security transport industry went on strike nationwide between July 1st and 5th, the effects are now affecting supermarkets, among other things. "Dear customers, please only pay by card if possible," said the morning in a Munich Rewe branch. Employees of Edeka, dm and Rossmann confirmed in an interview with "Focus Online" that no change had arrived in the branches on Tuesday.

However, there are also reports of ATMs not dispensing cash. In some banks and savings banks, individual machines were taken out of service as a precaution. It is unclear how many people responded to the Verdi union's call and withdrew cash as a precaution.

Verdi had negotiated a federal wage agreement with the Federal Association of German Money and Value Services (BDGW). He should bring the 11,000 employees a salary increase of almost 11 percent. Hourly wages should rise to between EUR 16.19 and EUR 20.60, depending on the region. The employers, in turn, said they had offered "effective hourly basic wage increases" of between 10.75 and 13.7 percent, depending on the region, in two steps over a period of 22 months, writes the German Press Agency. After the third round of negotiations burst last week, the Verdi union has now called warning strikes. The fourth round of negotiations is expected to start on Wednesday.

Pharmacies, gas stations and supermarkets will no longer receive change due to the warning strike. It is therefore possible that individual cash registers cannot issue cent and euro coins. If customers want to pay at the checkout, they should either have the right amount with them or pay by card.
