At least eleven migrants have died and more than 60 are missing after the ship they were traveling on sank off the coast of Libya, reported the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The ship, which had left Qasr Alkayar on Tuesday for Europe, was carrying some 80 people, of whom seven managed to swim to the Libyan coast "in extreme conditions" and are currently hospitalized, the organization said.

The Libyan Red Cross and the local police have recovered eleven bodies, said the IOM, which indicated that with this tragedy the number of deaths on the central Mediterranean route, one of the most dangerous, exceeds 130.

In 2022, the organization registered 1,450 deaths on this route, which from Libya and other Maghreb countries is mainly destined for Italy and Malta.
