Online franking and bulky goods: Hermes raises prices

The increased costs could not be offset by savings. This is how the logistics company Hermes justified the price surcharge from August. The new price table at DHL will apply from tomorrow.

After Deutsche Post DHL, the parcel service provider Hermes is also increasing its private customer prices for some types of shipment. Online franked parcels that are handed in at the parcel shop and delivered to the recipient's doorstep will cost 4.50 euros from August 1st, 20 cents more than before, as the Hamburg-based company announced. In the future, they will be just as expensive as parcels that are handed in at the parcel shop and only written on a note there.

With the online version, you enter the sender and recipient data beforehand, so that it is faster on site. The price for shipments to parcel shops where the recipient comes and picks them up remains the same - these shipments are cheaper because Hermes has less work to do.

In the parcel classes S to XXL, Hermes largely refrains from increasing prices. There is only a surcharge for parcels of size S and M that are not franked online. It is also more expensive for bulky goods - whether car tires or bumpers - and when shipping suitcases.

Hermes justified the price increases by saying that it was not possible to offset rising costs by optimizing work processes. Most recently, Hermes raised private customer prices in 2019.

The entire logistics industry has significantly higher costs than before because fuel and electricity have become more expensive and employees earn more. The market leader Deutsche Post DHL had also announced higher prices for some of the shipment categories for private customers, this will apply from July 1st.
