Only five copies: Zagato is back with Mostro Barchetta

After Zagto has not been heard from for a long time, the Italians are now back with a car that will only be built in a mini series. The Mostro Barchetta is an open two-seater with a retro design that weighs no more than 1.2 tons and can be powered by an optional 630 hp V8.

For a while it was quiet around the Italian coachbuilder Zagato. Now the traditional company known for its bold designs is back with the Mostro Barchetta. There will only be five copies of this roofless sports car in retro dress. Of course, all five copies have already been sold.

The styling of the new Zagato is not entirely unknown. As early as 2015, the design company launched a very similar coupé variant, which, like the new Barchetta, was based on the Maserati 450S Coupé Zagato from 1957. The brand name Maserati is emblazoned in the middle of the oval radiator grille of the flat front, which gives an indication of the drive.

Zagato gave buyers the choice between a classic Maserati V8 or the modern V6 biturbo of the MC20 and thus between 420 or 630 hp, each driving the rear wheels. The sports car, which weighs just 1.2 tons, is based on a carbon monocoque with a steel subframe that carries the rear suspension. The pushrod chassis with six-piston brakes from AP Racing, 19-inch wheels with central locking and double wishbones at the front and rear also have a motorsport accent.

Inside, the Mostro Barchetta offers a cockpit landscape dominated by seven analogue clocks. There is also an airbag-free sports steering wheel, sports seats with eye-catching decorative stitching and lots of leather and visible carbon surfaces. Zagato is keeping quiet about the price. However, as is usual with such projects, an amount in the millions is likely to be due.
