Overtime or termination: Musk gives Twitter employees a choice

Elon Musk is rigorously pushing ahead with the transformation of Twitter. The employees also feel this. He sent the remaining employees an ultimatum by e-mail: either they should be prepared for "long working hours with high intensity" or leave the company immediately.

In the midst of a wave of layoffs, new Twitter owner Elon Musk has given his employees an ultimatum: They have until Thursday to decide whether they want to accept "long working hours with high intensity" or take a severance payment of three months' salary, he wrote in an email to the employees. Anyone who has not clicked on a link confirming “that you want to be part of the new Twitter” by Thursday evening New York time is deemed to have been terminated.

"Whatever decision you make, thank you for your efforts to make Twitter successful," Musk wrote. "To build a groundbreaking Twitter 2.0 in the future and thrive in an increasingly competitive world, we must be extremely tough," the message said. "That means long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will be rated as passed." Musk also announced that Twitter will be "much more engineering-centric" under his leadership.

A copy of the message, reported by the Washington Post, was verified by the Reuters news agency. A person who received the message on Twitter also confirmed its content. Twitter could not immediately be reached for comment.

Since taking power on Twitter, Musk has been turning the social network inside out at breakneck speed. The billionaire and Tesla founder took over Twitter for $44 billion at the end of October. Immediately afterwards, he threw out the previous boss, Parag Agrawal, and other high-ranking managers. Musk also fired around half of the approximately 7,000 employees.
