Peace Day Calendar: why it is celebrated today, January 30

Since 1964, the School Day of Nonviolence and Peace (DENYP) is celebrated every January 30, popularly known as Peace Day. On this day, educational centers, from Infant to Secondary, throughout the world carry out different activities to remember the importance of "tolerance, solidarity, harmony, respect for Human Rights, non- -violence and peace", according to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

The School Day of Non-Violence and Peace is celebrated every January 30 because on that day, in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi, a pacifist leader who defended and promoted non-violence and peaceful resistance to injustice, was assassinated. for defending these ideas, by being shot by a Hindu extremist.

The Spanish poet, educator and pacifist Llorenç Vidal (Santañí, Baleares, 1936) established and promoted the School Day of Nonviolence and Peace (DENIP) in 1964, an educational experience of pedagogical renewal that in 59 years has managed to expand internationally. . Vidal defines his initiative as "a seed of non-violence and peace deposited in the subconscious mind and heart of the students and, through them, in society".

This day of reflection in favor of peace has been recognized by the Ministry of Education and Science since 1974 and by the UN since 1993.

Every January 30, educational centers commit themselves as defenders of peace and understanding between people of different origins and ways of thinking. Peace Day, due to its theme of non-violence, conflict resolution and coexistence, works at all levels to promote values such as tolerance, respect and solidarity.

From UNICEF they establish a series of knowledge and skills to work on the School Day of Peace through different activities and projects, from drawings, talks or debates:

Do not confuse the School Day of Nonviolence and Peace on January 30 with the International Day of Peace, which is celebrated every September 21 and is dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace. This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously decided to designate this day a day of non-violence and ceasefire.
