Retail in Germany: consumer sentiment worse than it has been for years

According to a recent survey by the German Retail Association (HDE), consumers are more reluctant to make purchases and purchases than they have been for a long time. The background is therefore the uncertainties surrounding the future development of energy prices, as the HDE announced on Monday. Weak consumer sentiment is also to be expected in the next three months, it said. "In addition, one's own income expectations are deteriorating compared to the previous month and there is therefore less scope for consumption activities or the expansion of savings."

The HDE measures consumer sentiment based on the survey in the form of an index value in the so-called consumer barometer. This value fell to below 87 at the beginning of August and thus to an all-time low, as the association further announced.
