The number of births in Spain stood at 329,812 in 2022, 7,011 less than in 2021 (when 336,823 births were registered), according to the estimate of births released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which places the figure last year at a new all-time low since the series began in 1941.

In this way, according to the data, the downward trend that has been registered in recent years is confirmed. Specifically, in 2016, 408,734 births were recorded; 391,265 in 2017; 370,827 in 2018; 358,747 in 2019; 340,635 in 2020 and 336,823 in 2021.

In addition, in the month of December 2022, 27,600 children were born in Spain, which is 929 fewer than in December 2021, according to the monthly estimate of births from the INE.

On the other hand, the INE data shows that in the first four weeks of 2023, 38,543 people have died in Spain, according to estimated data. This is 4,148 fewer people than in the same period of 2022 (with 42,691) and the lowest figure in those same weeks since 2020.

Compared to previous years, in 2021 there were 47,979 deaths during the first four weeks of the year, compared to 37,979 in 2020 and 39,769 in 2019. In 2018 there were 43,414 deaths in the same period.
