Tensions between the US and China over Taiwan weighed slightly on the Dax on Tuesday. After its minor losses at the beginning of the week, the leading German index closed 0.23 percent lower at 13,449.20 points. In July, the stock market barometer had still recorded strong gains. The MDax of medium-sized companies fell 0.17 percent on Tuesday to 27,380.11 points.

In the case of the individual values, the quarterly reports of the companies continue to move the courses. The shares of the manufacturer of fragrances and flavorings Symrise rose by a good one percent after a higher sales forecast for this year in the Dax.

In the MDax, Siemens Energy's shares lost one and a half percent. The wind power subsidiary Siemens Gamesa had previously lowered its earnings forecast for this year. The K S shares rose by around six percent at the top of the MDax.

In the SDax small-cap index, the shares of the plant manufacturer Krones increased moderately after optimistic statements about profitability. The shares of the mechanical engineering company Pfeiffer Vacuum, on the other hand, lost around six percent.

Equities that are heavily dependent on private consumption were also not in demand. Hellofresh, Adidas and Puma were among the biggest losers in the Dax with discounts of 1.0 to 3.7 percent. Zalando shares lost more than three percent. A comment by the US bank Morgan Stanley on a possible market entry by the online retailer in the US weighed on it.

The Eurozone leading index EuroStoxx 50 fell by 0.59 percent to 3684.63 points. France's Cac 40 suffered similarly significant pressure, while Britain's FTSE 100 ended almost unchanged. In the USA, the leading index Dow Jones Industrial was slightly in the red at the close of the European stock market.

The euro weakened amid tensions over Taiwan. The European Central Bank set the reference rate at 1.0224 (Monday: 1.0233) dollars. The dollar thus cost 0.9781 (0.9772) euros.

On the bond market, the current yield on German government bonds fell from 0.72 percent on the previous day to 0.60 percent. The Rex pension index rose by 0.61 percent to 138.35 points. The Bund future lost 0.11 percent to 158.21 points.
