Traffic: Tyrol: Complaints against truck night driving ban filed

The German logistics association BGL and other European industry associations have lodged complaints with the EU Commission against the truck ban on driving at night on the Tyrolean Inntal motorway. The Federal Association of Road Haulage, Logistics and Disposal (BGL) announced on Tuesday in Frankfurt that the general ban would massively restrict the basic freedom of free movement of goods guaranteed by the EU treaties.

It is a disproportionate measure that significantly affects the interests of the economy. The air quality in the Inn Valley is not improved as claimed, because traffic is only shifted from night to day, with additional traffic density.

Dissatisfaction with Tyrol's entry restrictions

According to the information, chambers of commerce also participated in the formal complaints. The BGL is also planning to file a complaint with the EU Commission against other measures taken by Tyrol, such as block handling and the sectoral driving ban. In order to relieve the pressure on the Inntal autobahn leading to the Brenner Pass, the Austrian federal state has restricted entry for trucks on several dozen days this year - at the Kufstein/Kiefersfelden border crossing, a maximum of around 300 trucks coming from Germany will be allowed to enter the country per hour. If necessary, heavy traffic is brought to a complete standstill.

According to the information, the EU Commission examines formal complaints within twelve months and decides whether to initiate formal infringement proceedings against the member state concerned.
