Stern, which was actually called Carl-Dieter Heckscher, stood 50 years on stage. He moderated numerous television shows, but was also active as a schlager singer and actor. In February 2017, Stern was awarded Golden Camera for his life's work. It was his last big appearance in public.

Stern had already moderated his last broadcast ten years earlier. He occasionally appeared as a guest on television shows and was also a singer on stage. He also published his biography.

Stern 1961 started his career in television program Toi-toi-toi, where he was discovered by Peter Franken as a singer. In same year he started as a speaker at n Southwest Funk (SWF) in Baden-Baden and later worked at Radio Luxemburg.

Nationally famous was stern with ZDF hit parade, which he presented from 1969 to 1984 live from Berlin. His greeting of audience with words "Here is Berlin" became legendary. Stern also moderated big Saturday night shows like melodies for millions, music is in air or super-charts on ZDF.
