Unmatched pre-crisis level: number of passengers more than doubled in 2022

155.2 million passengers took off from the 23 largest German airports last year. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 111 percent. Nevertheless, passenger numbers remain below the pre-crisis level.

The number of passengers departing from the 23 largest German commercial airports more than doubled last year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the airports counted around 155.2 million passengers. This corresponded to an increase of 111 percent compared to 2021, which was more strongly influenced by the corona pandemic.

However, the passenger volume was still a long way from the pre-crisis level of 2019, when the main airports recorded an all-time high of 226.7 million passengers, with 31.5 percent fewer passengers. After the end of the pandemic-related travel restrictions, traffic with other countries and traffic within Germany developed differently in 2022: traffic within Germany increased by 98.0 percent and traffic with other countries by 111.9 percent.

Compared to the pre-Corona year 2019, domestic German air traffic was still 59.5 percent lower and only reached a good two-fifths of the pre-crisis level. Air traffic with other countries, on the other hand, was only 28.3 percent below the value of 2019. In addition, 4.9 million tons of freight were transported at the main German airports. That was 6.7 percent less than in 2021, but 5.2 percent more than in 2019.
