Accident in Stuttgart: rescue workers find the body in the exploded house

After the explosion in a residential building in Stuttgart, a long search has been carried out for an 83-year-old resident. Hours later, rescue workers found a body under the rubble. It is assumed that it is the one you are looking for.

One person died in an explosion in a residential building in Stuttgart. The police in the Baden-Württemberg state capital said it was probably an 83-year-old woman who had been missing since the accident early in the morning. The body was recovered from under the rubble.

Four other residents of the house - a 56-year-old man, a 55-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy - were able to leave the affected semi-detached house in the west of the city before the collapse. They were taken to a hospital as a precaution with minor injuries.

Parts of the building collapsed after the explosion, others were on fire, as the Stuttgart fire brigade announced. In the afternoon, the fire brigade announced that the fire was under control but would continue to be fought. In addition, there was a wide range of emergency services and vehicles on site.

The backup and salvage operation continued into the evening. The adjacent semi-detached house was also so badly damaged that it was uninhabitable. According to the police, initial investigations on the spot revealed no evidence of a criminal offence. An accident is assumed. Firefighters suspected a gas explosion.

The blast also damaged surrounding buildings and cars. The fire brigade therefore picked up several burned-out cars with heavy equipment and cleared them aside. The residents of the surrounding buildings had to leave them for a short time, but were able to return later. The investigations continued.

Stuttgart Mayor Frank Nopper visited the scene of the accident together with Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl. The CDU politicians thanked the emergency services and expressed their condolences to those affected, as they announced.
