After the alleged murder of father: fugitive fatally injured cyclist

After allegedly killing his father, a 36-year-old tries to escape from the police. On the run from the officials, he hits four cyclists - for a woman the accident ends fatally. The police speak of a "mental state of emergency" of the suspect.

A fugitive, who is said to have killed his father before, hit four cyclists with a car in Mannheim. A 71-year-old cyclist was fatally injured. Three other people were seriously injured and taken to hospitals, police and prosecutors reported.

The 36-year-old suspect is accused of killing his 69-year-old father in Ellerstadt in Rhineland-Palatinate shortly after 6 p.m. The alleged perpetrator then fled in a car before the police arrived.

In Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, he collided with four cyclists. After the serious accident, the man fled again - this time on foot. He then jumped into the adjacent Rhine. "The man, who was probably in a mental state of emergency, was finally arrested by police forces," the investigators reported. A helicopter and the water police were deployed. It will now be further investigated. The scene of the accident on Mannheim's Rhenaniastraße was cordoned off over a wide area.
