After the holiday comes cooling: Ascension Day is only moderately summery

The weather is proving to be unsettled over the long bank holiday weekend. From suitable excursion weather to showers, everything is there. Temperatures will drop even further towards the weekend. Despite the upcoming month of June, the summer weather is still taking its time, says ntv weather expert Björn Alexander in an interview.

For many of us, a long weekend may be just around the corner. What will the weather bring?

Light and shade on the one hand and rather less summery temperatures on the other. At the same time, this has the advantage that the air is now out for major storms.

Speaking of storms: Our southern neighbors - Austria and Switzerland - had recently had to endure violent thunderstorms. Is it quieter there too?

First of all, not yet. Because the storm potential over the Alps and northern Italy as well as in other holiday regions such as the Balearic Islands and the Balkans is currently significantly higher. In addition to severe thunderstorms, there is also a risk of heavy rain, hail and squalls.

How is the development for us in Germany?

For Thursday - i.e. Ascension Day or Lord's Day or Father's Day - there is passable to very useful excursion weather in many places. Occasional showers are possible over the northern half along with a brisk wind. But especially the south, which was still partly soaking wet, gets a dry mix of sun and clouds.

At what temperatures?

The values are in the range suitable for excursions when it comes to hiking or cycling. Because it doesn't get too sweaty with mostly 20 to 24 degrees. Only in the north is it fresher at 15 to 19 degrees. After the sometimes hot times, the weather was ideal for sustainable ventilation.

But if you want to go to the coast or the lake for a swim: What are the current water temperatures?

Water sports enthusiasts who are used to neoprene and depend on the wind should get their money's worth. Only in a bathing suit or pants, the combination of a strong wind and a jump into the cool water is probably something for the hard-boiled. At the moment, the coasts of the North Sea and Baltic Sea are often reporting around 14 to almost 18 degrees. The bathing lakes are generally a bit warmer at 15 to around 20 degrees. All in all, the further south the lake is, the warmer it is.

What's next on Friday, the bridge day?

It will remain friendly and mostly dry in the south and west, while it will continue to be more mixed with showers in the north and east. It will remain windy over the northern half, sometimes stormy again. The temperatures are still subdued at 14 to 24 degrees.

And on Saturday ...

... the uncertainties in the details are getting bigger - but in principle the values should go down again. The sometimes strong wind with full gusts of wind on the sea turns northwest to north and ensures a fresh Atlantic temperature level between 13 degrees on the Ore Mountains and 20 degrees on the Upper Rhine. The south continues to have it best in terms of sun. Because in the middle and in the north, the weather computers see unstable prospects with an increased risk of rain.

What's the weather like on Sunday?

According to the current status, it should be slightly changeable everywhere. In addition to the sun, which could be a good thing, especially between the Main and Danube, we can expect one or two showers. The wind will be less fierce, but will continue to come from the north-west, which will put pressure on the temperature brakes again. From today's perspective, hardly more than 10 to 18 degrees are possible on Sunday.

The motto probably applies here: Better to shiver than to have to reckon with tornadoes. How common are these hurricanes in general here in Germany?

Of course, this depends entirely on the frequency of the corresponding weather conditions - especially in spring and summer. The year 2016, for example, played a prominent role here with many storms. At that time there were over 60 confirmed tornadoes plus more than 10 plausible cyclones and over 400 suspected cases. In the drought year 2018, on the other hand, there were just over 20 confirmed tornadoes and a few that can also be classified as plausible. At that time, there were just over 100 suspected cases. In this respect, there is a considerable, but strongly varying number of tornadoes in Germany every year.

How will the weather continue in the next week: stormy summer or rather Atlantic freshness?

Summer definitely doesn't play a role at the beginning of the week. Only at the beginning of June and thus at the Pentecost weekend do the forecasts reveal slight upward trends. It remains to be seen at least whether this is the big hit towards summer. When looking at the experimental long-term trends for June 2022, it is currently noticeable that the summer could have some initial difficulties in the first summer month.
