Before it gets hot again: Thunderstorm "Frieda" ensures a short cool-down

After several heat records, July is coming to an end. However, before a new heat wave continues in August, storms and thunderstorms provide a brief refreshment. ntv meteorologist Björn Alexander knows where it will rain and what temperatures await us afterwards.

ntv: July ends at the weekend - what do the weather maps look like?

Björn Alexander: All in all quite forgiving. All around, however, a rapid weather rally awaits us. First of all, thunderstorm "Frieda" comes to Germany before August starts with the next heat wave.

What threatens "Frieda"?

In the south and in the middle of Germany there are some strong thunderstorms from Friday night and on Friday itself. There is a risk of heavy rain of around 20 to 35 liters per square meter and corresponding flooding. And hail and gusts of wind cannot be ruled out either.

Up to the middle - is rain to be expected in the forest fire regions of eastern Germany?

In any case, the thunderstorm-active zone extends to Saxony. And with luck, it could also get wetter as far as southern Brandenburg. Regardless of the active fires, the generally high risk of forest fires in the south and south-east is of course reduced. At least temporarily.

Because then the next heat is approaching?

Correctly. The heat alone doesn't do that. But in combination with drought and sun it is unfortunately getting hot again.

How hot is it getting?

The weather computers are currently showing heat peaks of 35 to 38 degrees again in the middle of next week. Even the 40 degrees haunt the big world of weather models. But that is very unlikely from today's perspective. Nevertheless, it is unfortunately extremely hot again.

Where are the hotspots?

It will most certainly hit the south and very likely the center and southeast as well. The heat cannot be ruled out towards the north and north-west. However, the majority of the calculations remain fresher there. It feels like the umpteenth heat in Germany this summer.

What do the weather statistics say about the end of July?

For example, that there have been up to 14 hot days with temperatures of 30 degrees and more. The values in Regensburg in Bavaria climbed most frequently in the heat range. Extreme heat of over 35 degrees was also encountered exceptionally often. A number of places also experienced 40 degrees and more as well as a number of new records. At the same time, northern Germany had a rather average or even slightly too cool July, which has given us a deviation of a good one degree for the whole of Germany compared to the last 30 years.

What does the rain balance do?

The national average has not fallen 30 liters per square meter so far. This corresponds to a good 35 percent of the otherwise usual July rain. However, with some enormous differences. Because while some regions got through the core summer with a halfway acceptable rain yield, in other places less than 5 liters per square meter fell. At the lower end are currently Leiwen (0.8 liters), Trier-Petrisberg (0.7 liters) and Wittlich (0.5 liters) - all in Rhineland-Palatinate. In view of the above-average balance of sunshine and the heat, this is a catastrophic situation.

With what details does July start with the last few meters in terms of weather?

On Saturday, the last showers or isolated thunderstorms are still on the way from the Alps up to the Oder. Otherwise, however, the influence of Hoch "Mika" is spreading again. The rest of the country is mostly friendly to sunny and dry. The whole thing at 20 degrees in the Ore Mountains and 30 degrees in the Oberrein.

And on Sunday?

Cloud fields are moving through in the northwest, some of which can bring some rain. In the rest of the country, on the other hand, the sun often dominates with maximum values between 21 degrees on the North Sea and up to 33 degrees in the southwest.

What prospects await us in the coming week?

Monday and Tuesday tends to be a bit mixed in the north. In the meantime, however, the heat is spreading further in the south and center and is expected to peak on Wednesday, maybe on Thursday. Widespread with highs between just under 30 and over 35 degrees. From today's perspective, it will be hottest in the southwest. But the east could also get over 35 degrees again.
