Boat collides with ferry: three fishermen missing off Jersey in the English Channel

With a large contingent, rescue workers and private individuals are looking for three fishermen. They went overboard when their boat sank after colliding with a ferry.

Three people are missing after a fishing boat collided with a ferry off the island of Jersey in the English Channel. Private individuals from Jersey and France, as well as sea rescue workers, are using ships and helicopters to search for the fishermen. The Jersey Fishermen's Association said the 18-metre-long boat had sunk and been located at a depth of around 50 meters in Saint Ouen Bay on the west side of the island. So far there is no trace of the crew.

The ferry operator Condor confirmed the collision early in the morning. The captain retained control of the Commodore Goodwill, which was en route from the neighboring island of Guernsey to Jersey. The cargo ship was delayed in the port of the island's capital, Saint Helier. On board were 5 passengers and 24 crew members, all unharmed. The company pledged to support the investigation into the incident.

The Channel Islands Jersey and Guernsey off the French coast are not part of the United Kingdom, but are directly subordinate to the British royal family as so-called Crown Dependencies. The islands decide independently about judicial issues. London is solely responsible for foreign and defense policy.
