Circumstances still unclear: Dortmund police shoot 16-year-old attacker

A 16-year-old was fatally injured in Dortmund by one or more shots by police officers. The teenager had previously attacked the officers with a knife, said a police spokesman. There was initially no further information on the precise background to the police operation.

The police were called to Holsteiner Strasse around 4:25 p.m. Officers used the firearm, the police spokesman said. It was initially unclear how many shots were fired and whether several police officers fired.

The 16-year-old was seriously injured and died a little later during an emergency operation, it said. For reasons of neutrality, the investigations are no longer carried out by the Dortmund police, but by the Recklinghausen police.

The "Ruhr Nachrichten" quoted a public prosecutor as saying that the young person was a resident of a youth welfare facility. This is located on the premises of the St. Antonius parish where the fatal incident occurred.
