Debris field on the A5: Truck pushes guardrail into the opposite lane

In the evening in Baden-Württemberg, a truck driver loses control of his vehicle on the A5 and breaks through the central barrier. Several vehicles crash into the scene of the accident. While the material damage is in the hundreds of thousands, the occupants are all fortunate in their misfortune.

A truck driver caused a serious accident on Autobahn 5 near Raststatt with three injured and at least ten demolished vehicles. The car transporter broke through the central barrier on Monday evening and pushed it into the opposite lane, said a spokesman for the Karlsruhe police. Soil also ended up in the oncoming lane. A car crashed into the guardrail, a van drove up. At least six other vehicles then drove into the "debris field of road equipment and vehicle parts," said the spokesman.

It is unclear why the truck driver lost control of his vehicle, the police do not rule out a medical emergency. He and two people in a car suffered minor injuries. The northbound A5 was completely closed for the rescue work, and only one of the three lanes remained open to traffic in the southbound direction. Traffic was backed up for five kilometers each.

The police used a helicopter to search for cars that might have been thrown off the road in the dark - but found none. Since the early morning, the A5 around the scene of the accident has been open to traffic again in two lanes. The police estimate the damage at at least 250,000 euros.
